Make the house jolly with some striking decor upgrades
The lights are twinkling outside, the tree is sparkling in the window. You love decorating for Christmas, and so do we. So let’s not stop simply because we’ve taken care of the basics. Imagine these three angel musicians gracing your mantelpiece, or working their way up the stairs with Christmas beauty. Each handcrafted, handpainted angel stands nearly 20″ tall, wears an exquisite fabric robe in berry, green or gold, and holds a musical instrument. Halos and wings float behind, looking very much like the real thing. At Horchow ($200, above). However, if you’re more of the Sugar Plum Fairy type (What is a sugar plum, anyway, and why would it have its own fairy? These are things we’ve never understood. But let’s get back to the point), you will be vastly entertained with Nordstrom’s holiday collectible, all decked out in velvet, tulle and ribbon ($36, above left). Nativity sets are everywhere, from those tiny plastic ones (where the camels and sheep look like they were cut from the same mold) to large, life-size versions meant to sit outside. But we’re completely enamored with this artistic vision of the Holy Family. Created in Germany of cast bronze and finished with a green patina, the simple statuette suggests the truest of all relationships - that of parent and child. At Horchow ($150, above right).
We dare you to resist these folk art Santas. The charming tall, taller and tallest (28″) trio of accent pieces is handpainted, right down to the last hair on their very long beards. Snow and Christmas trees decorate the bottoms of their velvet robes. ($44, above left). If you like your Santas more on the bowl-full-of-jelly side, then the jolly Portly Santas, also hand-painted on wood, are perfect for you ($50, above right). Both at West End.
Do not tell us that you put a sheet or blanket around the base of your tree, or we will have to have one of Williams-Sonoma’s cutwork Christmas tree skirts sent to you post-haste. The gentle floral pattern is traced on red felt and cut out by hand before being attached to a white cotton base. It’s pretty enough to stand on its own; imagine it peeking through a pile of presents. ($89).
Pottery Barn is a master of the simple, pretty centerpiece, and their cranberry vase filler ($14 for 3.2 oz). shows why. The cranberries are plastic and have a painted finish; if you float them around a tall pillar candle in a gorgeous vase ($19-$44), you have something warm and welcoming that complements any table décor.
Perhaps you live in Florida, where you’ve never seen snow; perhaps you live in Buffalo, where you’ve seen way too much of it. Either way, you won’t find anything prettier for the top of your tree than this beaded snowflake tree topper. The beautifully silhouetted snowflake is covered with hundreds of tiny glass beads that will catch the colors from your tree lights and toss them back tenfold. At Saks Fifth Avenue ($95, above). |
