Stars’ fave designer tapped to create Obamas’ WH quarters

He has $100,000 to redecorate the new private living quarters for the Obama family, and we are insanely jealous.

California designer Michael S. Smith, who has become something of a Hollywood darling (Steven Spielberg, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cindy Crawford) and is one of  Architectural Digest’s 100 Top Designers, was confirmed this week as the official White House decorator. (He first said he wanted the job in Domino magazine.)

We are sure we’ll see his books, (Michael S. Smith Houses and Michael S. Smith: Elements of Style),  make their way to the front of bookstores, and zoom up the Amazon.com popularity list (”Acclaimed designer Michael Smith has earned a reputation as the thinking celebrity’s decorator,” their review says).

In the meantime, we’ve trolled around to get an idea of what we might see in the First Residence. (Shall we insert here that Mr. Smith has Labradoodles, one of the two finalist breeds for the new White House dog? We shall. We are certain it’s pertinent.)

Domino style director Dara Caponigro chose 10 of her favorite Michael S. Smith rooms. She singles out this living room for being cozy as well as grand, notes the combination of styles and eras in this canopy bedroom, and notes the simple forms of the furniture in contrast to the abstract art in this room. A slightly more formal bedroom shifts toward warm earth tones; a dining room shows pitch-perfect notes of cream and glass.

Smith’s Web site showcases his American sensibility and a European flair; his background includes studies in Los Angeles and London. He also designs his own furniture and fabric lines, named Jasper after a beloved dog. (We told you it was pertinent). Pictures in his portfolio often show generous displays of art and antiques.

“Michael shares my vision for creating a family-friendly feel to our new home and incorporating some new perspectives from some of America’s greatest artists and designers,” Michelle Obama said in a statement released Wednesday.

The Washington Post reported that Smith is already working on the bedrooms for 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha; it is assumed that he will make the residence into the welcoming, slightly more casual White House home Michelle Obama has spoken of in interviews. (It is also widely known that he really likes Target. The Style Insider is dying for details.)
