Jonas Brothers’ style: Skinny jeans, ascots, preppy chic
It was only a few years ago that they wore graphic Ts, ripped jeans and hoodies, just like regular teens. Now, the three Jonas brothers (everybody squeal!!) have evolved into stylish trendsetters, inspiring not just guys but girls around the globe to copy their looks. Despite the surly commentary on the brothers’ Grammy-wear in yesterday’s Huffington Post (an apparent attempt to fill up bandwidth with catty witticisms and a photo gallery), we feel obliged to point out that while their togs may not interest churlish adults, they hold the rapt attention of millions of teens. The heart-throbs were nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys earlier this week, and while they didn’t leave with the prize, they got plenty of style points for their snappy, dressy red carpet attire (photo above) — a far cry from their 2006 look (below). There is no shortage of information about the brothers Jonas on the Web, and there’s even a Jonas Brothers Fashion site, where some of the band’s outfits are dissected so fans can go buy the exact (or similar) looks. There are videos floating around in which the brothers chat about their unique sartorial sensibilities. The New Jersey natives (who got their big break on the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana) started getting help from stylist Michelle Tomaszewski a few years ago, and the result has been pop fashion nirvana (such as slick suits for Nick at left, Kevin at center and Joe at right at the Golden Globes this year, below) Among the style influences cited by Kevin, Joe and Nick are ’70s and ’80s bands (especially Duran Duran and Elvis Costello), Mick Jagger, Daniel Craig as James Bond, the Victorian era, Kanye West’s popped collar and Justin Timberlake’s suits. Kevin, the oldest at 21, likes a bit of a Victorian look. He also likes to dress up, especially with shiny shoes. He favors scarves and ascots, as well as Dior Homme suits. Band stylist Tomaszewski, told the Los Angeles Times that the cut, fabric and slim silhouette of the Dior suits, paired with a white dress shirt, are his favorites. Joe, 19, has cited ’70s and ’80s influences, a fondness for gold jewelry, colorful socks and sweater vests. He likes hats (especially fedoras) and ethnic scarves (either vintage or by Paul Smith), his stylist said. He wears Levi’s Capital E colored matchstick jeans and - very important - Superga sneakers in various colors. The youngest Jonas, Nick, 16, has called his look “formal rock,” pointing to green high-top sneakers, and jackets paired with white shirts with rolled up sleeves. He has cited J. Lindeberg and Dior as favorite labels. He leans toward a bit of a preppy look, with lots of Ralph Lauren, “from Polo to Purple Label to Rugby,” stylist Tomaszewski said, as well as cardigans. Other pieces he favors include vintage-styled leather jackets and more traditionally fitted jeans, especially A.P.C. and their New Cure slim raw denim. Other style bits and pieces they’ve mentioned are Phillip Lim T-shirts, brightly colored jeans, Ray-Ban Wayfarers, Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece label, Chelsea boots and skinny ties. At the Jonas Brothers fashion site, you can pull together a look like Kevin’s at the 2008 American Music Awards (above): a very expensive Brooks Brothers suit, a pastel dress shirt such as one from Ralph Lauren for $100, a striped tie that you can also find at Brooks Brothers, and natty black and white shoes (similar to a $315 pair from Shoe Shack). The band’s stylist suggests female fans search for jackets like Kevin’s at H&M and Forever 21 (for around $25), slim pants and white button-down dress shirts at H&M and a tweed vest from Banana Republic for $98. Oh, and don’t forget the Brooks Brothers ascot (which is expensive at $150) or a cheaper scarf, tied in a regular knot. If you want to emulate a few Joe looks, consider this layered look from a book launch event (above). The fashion site suggests a $159 white shirt (from Eluxury, no label cited), a $75 Ralph Lauren Rugby sweater under the jacket and a $60 Ralph Lauren tie. Or be a bit bolder with this Teen Magazine look, consisting of a similar shirt by Ralph Lauren for $100, a $118 Revolve Clothing vest, a pair of bright red $253 Revolve Clothing jeans and multicolored Karmaloop sneakers. The band’s stylist says Joe likes fedoras by Rod Keenan (from Barneys New York), Paul Smith scarves, 3.1 Phillip Lim V-neck Ts, Levis Capital E colored matchstick jeans ($172) and - of course - Superga sneakers from Shoebuy.com, $80. If young Nick is your fashion passion, try this look that he wore for a Cosmo Girl photo shoot: a $95 Rogues Gallery graphic T (the exact style he is wearing), a Urban Outfitters cardigan for a little more than $30, his Camel Hartford York hat (which is $495, gulp!) or a similar hat option from Urban Outfitters for a mere $28. Another colorful look is what Nick wore to the band’s Camp Rock movie premiere. You can pull it off with a purple plaid shirt atop a T-shirt, both from Overstock.com, $174 jeans from Urban Outfitters, the exact same green Converse high-top sneakers at Amazon.com with laces from Journeys and the same scarf, for only $2 from Be Wild. But don’t expect to get any of their stylish duds from their official Web site. You can only shop for T-shirts or hoodies there. |
