The Obamas welcome Easter, a puppy and 30,000 guests

michelle-obama-easter-dress-soronen-getty-daylife_comIt is a major news day in Washington, D.C. We can hardly get our minds around it all.

Of course, the city is all atweet about the new First Dog, Bo, a Portuguese water dog that’s about six months old. We can hardly wait to hear all the details — the dog walking, the dog feeding  and, especially, the White Housetraining (we nearly had an “accident” ourselves, when we saw the puppy, because he is so cute). Apparently the official unveiling is to come tomorrow, if you believe the leaks.

No pun intended.

OK, maybe it was.

But we’re to be forgiven, because as if the puppy wasn’t enough, yesterday was Easter Sunday, which meant the President and First Lady attended church. The President wore a pinstripe suit and a silver tie, but enough about him.

The First Lady chose a soft floral dress (you can see a peek of it in the photo above, from Getty) that Mrs-O.org tells us is a Peter Soronen design, though when he sent it down the runway it originally just had one shoulder (above). He apparently did a custom two-shouldered version for Mrs. Obama. The fabric is painted cotton lace, which doesn’t sound all that comfortable but sure looks gorgeous in a closeup. Mrs. O finished the Sunday look with a lightweight white cardigan and her double strand of pearls.

While our responsibility in this matter is not nearly as vital as that of the White House staff — which welcomed about 30,000 children to the annual event — TSI did work valiantly to catch sight of Malia and Sasha in the throng. Sasha was adorable in a purple top, pink polka dot leggings, black high-top sneakers (below left, photo from The Guardian), a black coat a blue headband; Malia (who seems to get taller in every photograph, this one sasha-obama-easter-egg-roll-guardian_co_ukabove right from The Guardian) wore a green top, blue pants and a striped blue cardigan.

No word yet on where the girls’ clothes came from (we did check the Crewcuts site, however). And the Mom-in-Chief kept it casual as well, wearing a green tie-neck sweater, a yellow cardigan, light blue pants and a dark blue jacket.

Barack Obama talked with the Easter Bunny, and while text of the conversation was not released, we are certain that it was every bit as important as his talks with heads of state on his recent European tour. The President wore no tie, which is apparently customary, because neither did Mr. Bunny.

Pictures do not show any hugging between Obama and Bunny, so The Style Insider believes that etiquette consultants were called in after Michelle Obama (delightfully, we thought, but no one asked us) hugged the Queen of England recently. In a cardigan, no less.

Americans are such upstarts.
