Eight pretty print dresses will make a mark

One of fall’s fun fashion trends is print dresses. Some designers mixed them up with clashing plaids or loopy crocheted  overlays for that “I’m so trendy I’m hard to look at” look. But others opted for beautiful, colorful prints that need no other adornment.  Some are sedate with a minimalist pattern, while others are a wild rainbow of blocks or artistic shapes.

One thing’s for sure about these skin-hugging print dresses: they are not for the faint of heart or the un-fit.

1. The prince of prints, Emilio Pucci, shows the others how it’s done with a “cinguettio” silk jersey dress from Saks. The clingy colorful dress is guaranteed to show off every curve. $1,535, above left.

2. If Pucci is the prince, then Diane von Furstenberg is the queen of prints. She continues her reign - usually a more toned-down look for her more low-key customers - with this gray, pink and white color-block Tilly dress from Barneys Coop, above right. The dress is $229, on sale from $345.

3. St. John lets its wild side show with its SoCa line, and this bright “painterly pattern” turns a basic cotton shift into something spectacular. At Nordstrom, $495.

4. Designer Jeremy Laing trotted out a few  colorful print dresses in his fall 2008 collection, such as this artistic kaleidoscope shift (above left) shown on his Web site. Other dresses in his collection had more tonal block prints in a minimal mix of colors. His clothes are sold in a select handful of stores across the U.S.

5. Popular designer Thakoon tosses together gathers and ruffles and a draped front on an elegant multi-hued Italian wool patterned frock. From Saks, $1,295 (above right).

6. If all these wild colors and patterns are making you dizzy, steady yourself with Kenneth Cole’s graphic “giraffe” print of basic black and cream. The dress is rayon, but wears like a sweater. From Dillard’s, $129 (above left).

7. Missoni’s been tossing colors together for decades, too, but they stray from their well-known stretchy linear zig-zag design with this zany mix of colors, patterns and fabrics. This M by Missoni dress (above right) is from Nordstrom, $845.

8. The delightful fall collection of designer Charles Nolan featured a cornucopia of styles and fabrics and lengths and looks, and he tossed a couple of colorful clingy print dresses into the mix. One of them was this sexy side-gathered dress of fall hues complete with requisite black tights, at left. (If you’re not wearing black tights with pretty much everything this season, you’re committing a fashion sin.) His clothes are sold at Saks and a few other select retailers.
