Guilty of holiday overspending? Frugal shoppers’ advice

holiday-spending-dreamstime-alan-crosthwaite

The Style Insider overspent during the holidays.

This will most likely not surprise TSI’s dear readers, who understand our love for pretty things. And perhaps some of you share our plight. So today, we are touring fabulous fashion and style blogs that emphasize more style and less money. It’s the responsible thing to do, n’est ce pas? At least for this week.

The Frugal Fashionista: We love knowing that Cameron Diaz hailed a cab in New York City wearing an ivory pea coat, a chic gray scarf, skinny jeans and quilted boots (above left). We love even more the Frugal Fashionista’s breakdown of Diaz’s look and how to get it for less.  Black beanie at Topshop, anyone?

The Bargain Queens revel in the words “half off the list price,” and we bet they bought their tiaras on sale. A particular day’s bargain might be an arty lipstick case for $2.50, huge blue topaz dangle earrings for $60 (They were $198, then $90, above right), or a crazy-pretty $298 Max Studio dress for $98.

Chic Alert: Tuck this site into your wallet next to your credit cards — they’ll appreciate the break. This week Chic Alert is throwing confetti over Gucci’s fall/winter sale, especially their Hysteria bag (they’re wild for the dark grape crocodile for $15,759 - above; we’re ecstatic over the red python for $4,190). Think of this site as a personal shopper whisking you around to all the best sales, helping you score handbags, shoes and coats at bargain-basement prices. (It’s a really nice basement, though. No paneling.)

The Budget Fashionista’s welcome mat is out, and it is covered with coupon codes. Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters and New York & Co. are prominent today, as is a quick 20 percent off on already discounted bags at Piperlime (such as the Dutchy DG clutch, below left) with the coupon code of WOW. Sign up for email, and you’ll get deals in your mailbox from Kathryn Finney, the Fashionista herself, who started the site when she was covered up with college loans instead of pretty clothes. She’s righted the situation.

The Recessionista likes Thakoon for Target, shops at both Neiman Marcus and Kohl’s, and believes a New Year’s dress doesn’t have to break the bank. She shows the math with a Kristin Davis dress at Belk ($27, was $108), a BCBG affair on Haute Look, and a LB Norma Kamali shirred jersey D (above right) at Wal-Mart (did we just say Wal-Mart? OMG, we’re running with scissors now) for $20. And, no, we did not leave a 0 off.

The Stiletto Jungle loves us, and they want us to be happy. It’s why they’re showing us a site like YOOX, where designer clothes go to heaven and wait for a new home. Their vintage party dresses category is to die for, though the racks are a little bare from New Year’s Eve shopping. That’s why we’re spending all our time on the sale page, where we found these adorable Chloe shoes ($125, were $430) and this classy Zac Posen jacket ($869, was $1,580).

Miss Amy Shops, and we are definitely going along. She admits to a bit of a post-holiday fashion coma, which we adore, but she’s also jazzed about her recent day-after finds, including a DKNY Infinity tube scarf (we found this one for $80, it used to be $110) and a pair of Unisa heels (we like this cute slingback, which started at $100 and is an obscene $30 now). We can’t wait to see what she finds in ‘09.

Thanks for mentioning The Recessionista(TM) blog on your list. I laughed when I read your description of the NK dress at Walmart…..unbelievable huh? But true.
There is everything out there from famous designers at shopping clubs, stores and on eBay if you just do a little research.

That scarf is now down to $49.99 at that same link above. My shopping sniffer is apparently working! Thanks for the mention - this was a great feature. Frugal fashion blogs united in one post - gotta love that!
