Chic and cheap: Warm up the sleigh

We’ve got Santa’s bag out, and none too soon; Thanksgiving came a little late this year, so we’re a tad behind on our shopping. Here are some cool, creative gifts we’ve found for under $100 each:

Is there a cook on your list? How about a college student? Either would appreciate this Breville Ikon panini press from Williams-Sonoma ($99, left), which sears breads to a crusty finish without smashing the sandwich’s filling. It also does duty as a quesadilla or cheesesteak maker. Yum.

We’re dying for Uncommon Goods’ puzzle piece ottoman, but we have one problem - we want to buy about a dozen, and link them all together. Plus, they might be a little difficult to wrap. But we can’t resist ($80 each, above).

Let Christmas morning ring in a whole new era with the Krups Burr coffee grinder ($60, right) from Crate & Barrel. The grinder has 17 settings between fine and course and a quantity setting for between 2 and 12 cups, so you’ll never waste coffee (as if that’s really possible).

We’re sure your favorite fashionista has taken advantage of this fall and winter’s bounty of purple and eggplant trends. Give her the perfect accessory in Ross-Simons’ sterling amethyst bracelet, which sets five oval amethysts along a filigreed sterling bangle ($94.50, above).

The perfect gift for mom: Start with Red Envelope’s hall gallery frame set, and fill the frames with gorgeous photos of the family. The set holds 11 photos - some horizontal, some vertical - in a variety of sizes, so everything from candids to formal shots will fit ($99, above).

Kenneth Cole’s belted trench coat will be a career girl’s dream come true - sleek and single-breasted, with a hem that falls just above the knee. It’s flattering and protective without the typical bulk. At Macy’s ($95, above left).

Imagine the places these pretty Pier One rattan vase baskets could take you - the hearth, the center of the dining room table or that perfect niche in the bookcase, going solo or filled with grasses and silk flowers. ($45 and $65, above right)

Who’s the entertainer on your list? He or she really really wants the rapid beverage and wine chiller ($90, left), partly because it chills a bottle of wine in six minutes, and partly because it’s just a really cool gadget. At Macy’s.

The best stocking stuffer on the block? That would be the Samsung handheld mini DVD player at Amazon.com, with its 2.5-inch LCD color screen and 2.5 hours of playback. Just record digital content from your PC onto mini-DVD discs and away you go ($99, right).

Hammacher Schlemmer’s mission statement? We swear it must be “to find weird stuff you never saw before and now can’t live without.” Surely the hypnotic jellyfish aquarium ($70, below) fits that bill, letting you zone out to seaweed, coral reefs and jellyfish that float in the water to a backlit LED. Ho, ho, ho.
