Don’t start to party without daring, dazzling neckwear

lanvin-3-strand-pearl-net-a-porter-com

You’ve found the party dress and the perfect shoes. You’ve scheduled the mani-pedi and pulled out your cute evening clutch. You are paparazzi-worthy,  except for one thing. What is that around your neck?

No, no, no. A dress like that demands a necklace worthy of your décolletage. It must shimmer in the light and reflect the twinkle in your eyes.

It must catch your prince’s eye and leave him wondering how you made your fortune. It must be worthy of its real estate, regardless of its price tag.

We might nominate Lanvin’s three-strand pearl necklace, a gray-pearl-and-ribbon confection that falls loosely from its grosgrain tie ($1,220, top), or  Vera Wang’s Lavender Label jewel and ribbon necklace, which gives the same sparkling effect for a lot less coin ($325, above left).

If  you’re in basic black, send it over the top with Stephen Dweck’s agate and quartz pendant, which dangles a stupendous circle of agate from tiny triple chains. At Bergdorf Goodman ($585, above right). We think our favorite has to be Tom Binns’ Dumont crystal necklace, but your dress must be simple, understand? Because this is a riot of crystal ($2,670, directly above).

You’re wearing a pretty V-neck? Take a peek at Nordstrom’s Nadri Brio Drop crystal necklace, where Swarovski crystals glimmer in the chain and dangle from the drop ($198). We’re also enchanted with the Zoe Tahitian pearl and diamond necklace for $7,000, which begs to be paired with the dress of your life.

There are all kinds of gorgeous options out there for bold girls. You might fasten Ippolita’s art link necklace (below left) from Saks Fifth Avenue around your neck and let its hammered gold links caress your skin, for $8,900. You might spend a lot less and still indulge yourself in Nordstrom’s Lois Hill skyscraper tiered necklace, and let its architectural forms complement yours ($398, above).

Hmmm. You’re determined to go delicate, and we’re determined to not let you do it. Let’s compromise, with the pussy willow necklace at Sundance, in which cultured pearls bud out from wandering branches of silver ($220, above center). We’re head over heels for the Renee Lewis rectangular shake necklace, where a wealth of little white diamonds swim around in a glass pendant drop ($14,500, above right).  Or maybe you’ll let us talk you into adding Judith Ripka’s white quartz emerald cut enhancer to your prettiest necklace chain ($800, below).

And when we win the lottery, we’re headed straight for Tiffany, where we’re dying for their charms. But not for a bracelet — we want a necklace full of charms, all dangling from the most exquisite of chains. We’ll start with their pink and diamond handbag ($2,300), we’ll finish with a tiny Tiffany box ($150), and we’ll add half a dozen more in between.

Just imagine how difficult it will for the prince to resist fondling our, uh, charms.

Happy happy.
