Stripes throw a spring party on dresses, tops & one cute bag
Go to your closet. Take inventory. Did you find any stripes? If not, you’re going to want to shop, because stripes were huge in the spring 2009 runway collections. OK, let’s revise that a little: Sometimes they were huge and other times they were tiny, but they were definitely everywhere. (Full disclosure: We actually favor polka dots. But even we must admit that stripes are fresh and fun.) Such as this crisp strapless cotton striped dress at White House Black Market, in which various widths of stripes set off a pretty knee-length A-line skirt. Removable straps make it office-worthy; a black or white jacket even takes it to the board room. ($110, was $158, above left). Meanwhile, the stripes on this Max Mara “Ara” striped silk dress are throwing a party. The black, gray and white pattern tolerates thin accents of lime green, and together they zigzag from the shoulders to the empire waist to the side seams and beyond. ($1,105 at Nordstrom, above right).
We’re pretty much in love with this Chloe striped linen top (above left). The boatneck seems flattering and the dolman sleeves give it volume without heft. It’s $1,250 at Nordstrom, which discourages us, but we’ll be looking for knockoffs and imitators. Let us know if you find them first. This, however, we may have to order this very second. BCBG Max Azria’s sleeveless crayon-stripe matte jersey dress is so cute we’re looking for our old box of 96. At Macy’s ($148, above right). This is the dress that you save for the day when you do not want a waistband of any kind. Wear it as a dress with leggings or as a tunic over pants, and look adorable either way. It’s MM6 by Maison Martin Margiela’s striped shirtdress, at Saks ($235, above left). Or this, which is just as cute and even more forgiving. It’s a Marc by Marc Jacobs mixed-stripe jersey dress, with pockets in the overskirt and a grey neckline accent. At Net-a-Porter ($250, above right). And honestly, we can’t leave MJ before we mention his Brittany striped dress, because it looks exactly like the kind of thing we’d love, all fitted up top and loose through the skirt. At Neiman Marcus ($278, below).
Horizontal stripes aren’t usually slimming, but we may make an exception for this Kensie wide-stripe sweater vest. The wide black stripe around the hips and the thin black stripe around the waist are doing their jobs admirably, creating smaller spaces than the brighter stripes around them. We’re willing to gamble. At Macy’s ($39, was $78, below).
Get a closeup of this sunset stripe skirt. The stripes run vertically along the seams and diagonally in the gored insets, giving it a floaty, ballerina shape that begins with a drop waist and would complement any shape. At Coldwater Creek ($39, was $89.50, below left).
We want to send you this little V-neck top just for reading the blog, because it’s so cute, so flattering and so reasonably priced. How can a little sleeveless shirt be so simple and yet so sexy at the same time? We don’t know, but Victoria’s Secret has figured it out, and they’ve done it in 13 colors and patterns. ($25 or 2 for $40, above right).
Unless maybe it came in polka dots.
