Jonathan Adler at the (pink) helm for Barbie’s 50th bash
We are just not sensing a mid-life crisis here. Barbie turns 50 on Monday, and to celebrate, her handler, Mattel, is throwing her a mega-party. They even commissioned “Happy Chic” designer Jonathan Adler to decorate a real Malibu Dream House — 3,500 square feet, complete with pink carpet and white couches, looking out on the Pacific Ocean.
What more could a fashion doll covet? Well, maybe a take-no-prisoners shoe closet, outfitted with dozens of perfectly matched pink open-toe pumps, or a pink VW bug in the garage with a fold-out vanity in the trunk. Adler said it took months to design and a few weeks to install the glam site. And apparently, Barbie was not a diva about it at all. “Barbie was a dream client because she doesn’t exist as a person,” Adler told the Associated Press. “She exists as fantasy and is the perfect client because she’s always happy and fun and loves everything. I thought to myself, ‘How would Barbie live?’ What I thought was Barbie would have a house that is glamorous, kittenish, chic, colorful and happy — as well as functional.” Functional has never been a word that we’d apply to Barbie (Excuse us, but what 6-year-old can actually get those shoes on Barbie’s feet? Hmmmm?), but TSI loves the party girl anyway. (Despite her insistence on plastics. Rumor has it she’s unveiling an entire new face on her birthday, and it isn’t the first time.) The chi-chi invitation-only party arrangements are in the hands of event-planner-to-the-stars Colin Cowie, who thinks nothing of planning weddings in Provence or grand openings in Dubai. All this just a couple of weeks after the New York Fashion Week Barbie runway show (where 50 designers participated), a month of celebration at Bloomingdale’s, and a hot new makeup collaboration with Stila. She’s also got her own Facebook page, and - yes - of course - she’s on Twitter. Can’t the girl take a nap? |
